Afghanistan, a rising cricketing nation since gaining ICC full membership in June 2017, finds itself at a crucial juncture where they must translate their growth into a standout performance in a global cricketing event. While they debuted in the 2015 World Cup, their journey has been marked by mixed results, with just one victory out of 15 matches in their two World Cup appearances so far, notably against Scotland. In the 2019 World Cup, they came close to upsetting cricket giants India and Pakistan but fell short. Now, they aim to surpass their past performances and make the upcoming edition a memorable one.

As they gear up for their tournament opener against Bangladesh in Dharamsala, let’s conduct a SWOT analysis of Afghanistan’s cricket team.

 

Strengths: Under the leadership of Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan boasts a formidable spin department, including seasoned players like Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Noor Ahmad. Rashid Khan, in particular, stands out as he brings a wealth of experience from the Indian Premier League (IPL), having played since 2017 and earned 139 wickets from 109 IPL matches. His impressive ODI record in India, with 23 wickets from 13 matches, adds to his allure. Additionally, Afghanistan will look to Rashid’s batting prowess in the lower order.

Former captain Nabi, with 147 ODIs under his belt, is expected to showcase his all-round skills, while 22-year-old Mujeeb is set to lead the attack with the new ball.
