AAP MP Sanjay Singh Arrested by ED in Delhi Excise Policy Case

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, MP Sanjay Singh, was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. He becomes the third AAP leader to face arrest by the central agency this year.

This high-profile arrest in the Delhi excise policy case follows the arrest of Deputy CM Manish Sisodia earlier. Furthermore, Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain was apprehended by the ED on May 30, 2022, in a separate money laundering case.

Sanjay Singh’s residence underwent a day-long raid and extensive questioning by ED officers, culminating in his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in a local court on Thursday morning, where ED officials will seek his custodial interrogation.

Several leaders from the opposition, including Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, have expressed support for Sanjay Singh. They view his arrest as a move that will strengthen the newly formed alliance aimed at challenging the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal criticized the arrest, denouncing it as “utterly unlawful” and alleging that it represents a desperate move by the BJP.

Kejriwal stated in a press release, “The detention of Sanjay Singh is entirely unlawful. This demonstrates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anxiety. They may detain more opposition leaders before the elections.”

In a pre-arrest video message, Sanjay Singh maintained that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was arresting him without substantial evidence.

“I am prepared to face any outcome, even death, but I will not bow down. I have brought Adani’s alleged wrongdoings to light and submitted numerous complaints to the ED, but no action has been taken against Adani. It is evident that Modi ji’s prospects in the 2024 elections are dimming significantly. Resorting to oppression and imprisonment will not secure their victory.”

“I have previously raised concerns about Adani’s alleged misdeeds, and I will continue to do so in the future. We are staunch supporters of (Arvind) Kejriwal, and we will not be deterred by such injustices,” Singh declared in the message, which was shared with the media. It is worth noting that AAP also holds power in Punjab.
