Chennai still Ongoing Flooding and Power Outages After Cyclone Michaung

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, faces continued challenges as the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung persists, leaving residents coping with widespread waterlogging and a prolonged lack of power for the third consecutive day. The Tamil Nadu government cited a “preventive measure” for the ongoing power suspension in certain areas, attributing it to submerged cables. Efforts are underway to restore normalcy in the affected regions.

In the aftermath of heavy rains triggered by the cyclone, localities such as Velachery and Tambaram remain inundated. Residents were observed evacuating their homes, navigating through stagnant water with children in tow. Rajaram, a shop owner in Kolathur, reported significant losses due to power supply disruptions, with water entering more than 30 shops and substantial financial damages.

Relief efforts are in progress, with the Tamil Nadu government relocating affected individuals to relief camps where essential supplies, including food and water, are being provided. Parvathi, currently in one of the relief camps, expressed gratitude for the assistance, highlighting the availability of proper food, water, and basic necessities.

 

Despite ongoing relief activities, challenges persist, with Senbagham, a relief camp worker, describing her flooded area and water stagnation. Power restoration remains incomplete in several parts of the city, including Kilpauk and Kattupakkam. The government emphasizes the continuation of relief operations, including the use of inflatable boats for rescues, even during late hours.

Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena assured the public that drainage efforts were underway in many parts of the city. Cleaning and restoration work on roads were in progress, with a focus on supplying drinking water to affected areas. Various agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are actively involved in relief and rehabilitation activities. The police have also established helpline numbers to assist citizens during this challenging time.
