Air India has recently unveiled a fresh and modern look for its pilots and crew members, representing a significant departure from the crew uniforms that have been in place for over six decades since the airline’s inception in 1932. The unveiling coincides with a pivotal moment for the airline as it integrates Vistara into its operations through a merger.
The airline’s new uniform, designed by renowned fashion icon Manish Malhotra, is a departure from tradition and embraces a vibrant color palette, including red, aubergine, and gold. These hues are carefully chosen to symbolize the confidence and dynamism of the emerging India. The airline plans to introduce this new look to its more than 10,000-strong flight crew, ground staff, and security personnel by the end of the current year.

In a statement, Air India described the revamped uniforms as an “ode to Air India’s rich history and a promise of a bright future.” The choice of colors is seen as a nod to the nation’s cultural richness and diversity.
This move is part of Air India’s broader strategy to redefine its global brand identity as it continues its modernization journey. The airline has ambitious plans, having recently placed an order for a substantial number of aircraft from Boeing and Airbus earlier in the year.
Campbell Wilson, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, expressed confidence in the transformative power of the new uniforms, stating that they encapsulate the essence of the airline’s new identity, service principles, and aspirations to set new benchmarks in global aviation.
Designer Manish Malhotra, who was entrusted with the task of crafting these innovative uniforms, expressed his honor at contributing to the national flag-bearer. He shared his aim of creating uniforms that not only reflect India’s diverse culture and traditions but also embody a modern and sophisticated look. In his words, the design seeks to showcase the elegance and charm of Indian fashion on a global stage.
As Air India charts a new course in its journey, these uniforms serve as a tangible expression of the airline’s commitment to a dynamic and promising future, blending tradition with a contemporary aesthetic.
