Modern Beats Meet Traditional Melodies in Kalpana Patowary’s ‘Gangasnan
06 January 2025 , New Delhi
Renowned Indian folk singer and playback artist Kalpana Patowary continues her trailblazing efforts to preserve and celebrate India’s cultural and musical heritage with her latest project, ‘Gangasnan.’ This groundbreaking track masterfully blends the richness of Bhojpuri folk traditions with contemporary jazz influences. It draws inspiration from the legendary Bhikhari Thakur, hailed as the Shakespeare of Bhojpuri literature, and features the genius of celebrated Indian jazz pianist Louiz Banks.
Set to release at the Mahakumbh 2025, ‘Gangasnan’ pays homage to the sacred Ganges River, revered in Hinduism for its spiritual purification and healing powers. The song captures the essence of Ganga Snan—the ritual of bathing in the holy river, symbolizing spiritual cleansing and the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth. Through this fusion of ancient beliefs and modern musical artistry, Patowary creates a bridge between tradition and innovation.

The track begins with a soulful jazz-blues piano introduction, transitioning into Patowary’s commanding vocals. Louiz Banks’ signature synth fillers add a contemporary touch, accompanied by a dynamic drum solo by Gino Banks and the evocative strains of the sarangi, played by Dilshad Khan. The song’s progression crescendos into a powerful anthem with rock guitar elements by Kush Upadhyay, French horns, and a stirring choir. It concludes with an up-tempo finale, where Banks’ piano improvisation seamlessly complements Patowary’s vocals, enriched by Sheldon D’Silva’s robust basslines.
Shot in the culturally significant cities of Kashi (Varanasi) and Prayagraj, ‘Gangasnan’ is visually as evocative as it is musically. The project is helmed by National Award-winning filmmaker Samujjal Kashyap, whose direction beautifully captures the spiritual essence of the Ganges. The song also features international artists, including Santi from Spain and Surush Sacha from Denmark, and honors the late Ramagya Ram, a 115-year-old folk legend from Bihar.
Written by Arunav Deka and composed by Bhikhari Thakur in collaboration with Louiz Banks, ‘Gangasnan’ represents a monumental artistic endeavor. It not only preserves the legacy of Bhikhari Thakur, an iconic figure in Bhojpuri literature but also propels Indian folk music onto the global stage.
This innovative project stands as a testament to Kalpana Patowary’s commitment to redefining the soundscape of Indian folk music. By merging the timelessness of tradition with the vibrancy of modernity, ‘Gangasnan’ is poised to become a cultural milestone, celebrating the evolving yet enduring legacy of India’s spiritual and musical traditions.
