India’s Prime Minister joins G7 leaders in Kananaskis for his sixth straight summit, as discussions span energy, AI, and security, while efforts to repair India-Canada ties gain momentum.
New Delhi: June 17, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Canada’s Kananaskis region to attend the G7 Summit, marking his first visit to the country in ten years. This is PM Modi’s sixth consecutive appearance at the annual summit of world leaders, where key global concerns such as energy security, artificial intelligence, and quantum technology dominate the agenda.
When he is there, PM Modi is expected to conduct a series of bilateral meetings to strengthen India’s diplomatic outreach. Modi’s attendance is well-timed with recent turbulence in India-Canada relations after allegations from Canadian authorities about the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In recent months, however, both nations have taken measured steps toward normalizing relations through diplomatic dialogue and backchannel engagement.
The Prime Minister’s arrival in Canada follows his official visit to Cyprus and comes ahead of anticipated discussions on counterterrorism initiatives. Some of these are India’s new Operation Sindoor to take down the terror infrastructure across and adjacent to POK with the backdrop of the deadly Pahalgam attacks.
Meanwhile, back home in India, it is facing severe weather advisories and concerns with aviation. The torrential rains of the monsoon have raised red alerts in many districts in Kerala. Delhi is expecting thunderstorms to provide relief from its intense summer heat but is also contemplating the tragic crash of Air India in Ahmedabad. This incident has rattled the aviation regulators on the rare occurrence of a dual engine failure and has caused Boeing stock to fall precipitously on a worldwide basis.
Across the globe, India’s participation in the G7, may show how India is balancing the complexities of global partnerships, internal politics, and regional security relationships all while demonstrating the increasingly important role of New Delhi’s voice on the global stage.
