Loneliness in the Midst of a Crowd of Relationships—Anurag Basu’s Poetic Look into Urban Existence
Rating: 3.5/5
New Delhi: Anurag Basu’s long-awaited movie Metro… In Dino has finally been released in the cinema halls. Although it reminds one of his 2007 blockbuster Life in a. Metro, this is not a sequel as such. Rather, this is a genuine patchwork of emotions and relationships, woven with sensitivity and care. This is not merely a combination of tales—it is an endearing tapestry of human feelings and vulnerable relationships.
Multiple Lives in One Frame
Being a Mumbai city-bred film, the movie is an anthology—a multiplicity of stories woven into the same fabric. It reflects the intricacies of contemporary relationships, the baggage from the past, and the small sparks of hope. Once more, Anurag Basu’s direction strikes the emotional chords, depicting the heartbeat of urban isolation and love with truthfulness.
Konkona & Pankaj: The Most Impactful Pair
The strongest story is of Kajol (Konkona Sen Sharma) and Monty (Pankaj Tripathi)—a couple dealing with emotional detachment after years of marriage. They are the representation of the middle class’s silent struggles—relationships that neither flourish nor entirely break down. The depth that Konkona’s mature act and Pankaj’s effortless charm bring to their narrative.

New-Age Confusions
Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur portray a young couple grappling with uncertainty. Sara plays a woman lost in her own thoughts, while Aditya’s character offers calm and balance. Though their chemistry feels organic, Sara’s performance doesn’t quite match the emotional steadiness of Aditya’s portrayal.
Ali-Fatima: A Tale of Incomplete Closure
Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh’s tale depicts relationships that are technically over yet persist because of habit and fear. Their tale is familiar to couples living together but emotionally far apart—tied by routine, not love.
Anupam & Neena: Bittersweet Reunion
Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta are a welcome change. Two old friends discover life and love in their twilight years. Their tale, serene and wistful like the streets of Kolkata, is a warm, lingering memory.
*Music: The Voice of the Soul
The music, composed by Pritam and beautifully sung by Papon and Raghav Chaitanya, is not just a soundtrack—it’s an emotional backbone. Every tune and every background score enriches the mood and meaning of the stories.
Direction: Subtle but Strong
Anurag Basu once again demonstrates that he is able to capture human feelings without melodrama or grand dialogues. He doesn’t go for perfect love stories—he rather finds the beauty in imperfect, incomplete ones.
Should You Watch It?
If you like high-octane drama with comedy and quiet, reflective cinema that grows on you—Metro… In Dino is worth watching.
It is not a perfect film—certain tales seem unfinished, and some of the characters lack dimension. But it’s one that stays with you long after the credits have rolled. And maybe that’s the biggest compliment it gets—you want it to go on just a bit longer when it ends.
