New Delhi: The globally beloved Japanese anime franchise Crayon Shin-chan has marked a historic moment in India. Its 31st feature film, Eiga: Crayon Shin-chan: Oratachi no Kyoryu Nikki (Shin-chan: Our Dinosaur Diary), won the Best International Animated Feature Film Award at the ANN Awards 2025, while the cheeky main character Shin-chan himself bagged the Best Animated Licensed Character Award.

The announcements were made at the sixth edition of the ANN Awards, hosted during the Anime India/Animation & More Summit held from August 22–24 in Mumbai. For the first time, the awards accepted entries from across Asia, expanding their scope and establishing themselves as a significant international recognition platform for animation.

Major Wins at ANN Awards 2025

The Best International Animated Feature Film Award is considered one of the top honors at the event, celebrating animated films longer than 40 minutes that demonstrate excellence in animation quality, direction, character design, and narrative depth. Our Dinosaur Diary impressed audiences and critics alike, standing out for its emotional storytelling, adventurous spirit, and polished visuals.

Alongside the film’s recognition, Shin-chan — a character who has entertained generations — was crowned Best Animated Licensed Character. The award highlighted the anime’s remarkable cultural footprint in India, where it has been broadcast for 19 years and continues to air seven days a week. Judges praised the franchise’s consistent popularity, merchandising success, and its potential for further cross-cultural IP development.

Box Office Success in Japan and India

Oratachi no Kyoryu Nikki first premiered in Japan on August 9, 2024. It quickly became the highest-grossing film in the franchise, earning 2.69 billion yen (approx. 18.3 million USD). When released in India in May 2025, it attracted large audiences, cementing Shin-chan’s place as one of the most loved anime characters in the country.

The timing of the ANN Awards win coincides with the release of Shin-chan’s 32nd film, Eiga Crayon Shin-chan: Cho Karei! Shakunetsu no Kasukabe Dancers (Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers). The latest film debuted in Japan on August 8, 2025, across 372 theaters, opening in fourth place at the domestic box office.

Indian Release of Shin-chan’s 32nd Film

Indian fans won’t have to wait long to catch the newest adventure. The film is scheduled to hit theaters across India on September 26, 2025, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubbed versions. What makes this release even more special is that the story itself is set in India, creating an extra layer of connection for local audiences.

Tie-up projects between Japanese and Indian companies are already in progress, aiming to expand Shin-chan’s reach through localized promotions, music, and merchandise. Reports suggest that a new version of one of Shin-chan’s popular songs, featured in the film, will also be released in three Indian languages.

Crayon Shin-chan’s Legacy in India

Since its debut on Indian television nearly two decades ago, Crayon Shin-chan has grown into one of the most recognizable anime properties in the country. It appeals not just to children but also to nostalgic young adults who grew up watching Shin-chan’s antics. Its ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments has made it a cultural staple.

The franchise’s adaptability through TV, films, and licensing partnerships has ensured its continued relevance. Winning two major awards at the ANN Awards 2025 further strengthens its position as an international brand with a strong Indian fanbase.

Significance of ANN Awards 2025

The ANN Awards, now in their sixth year, have emerged as one of India’s premier platforms for recognizing achievements in animation. By expanding submissions to all of Asia this year, the awards have positioned themselves as a hub for international collaboration in the animation industry. With India’s growing interest in anime and global IPs, the recognition of Shin-chan demonstrates the country’s openness to celebrating international content alongside domestic productions.

Looking Ahead

As Shin-chan celebrates 19 years of uninterrupted broadcasting in India, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down. The combination of strong box office results, international awards, and upcoming localized releases signals a bright future.

With Super Hot! The Spicy Kasukabe Dancers set to entertain Indian fans this September, and licensing opportunities expanding rapidly, Shin-chan continues to prove that mischief, humor, and heartfelt storytelling can transcend borders.
