Thai woman gives birth at 35,000 feet en route to Mumbai; crew and nurse hailed for quick action.
New Delhi, July 25, 2025
A 29-year-old Thai woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy on an Air India Express flight from Muscat to Mumbai on July 25, 2025, when the aircraft was at an altitude of 35,000 feet. The flight attendants, who had help from a a nurse on board, managed quite a feat with great heart and professionalism for both mother and baby. The flight was in the early morning when the mother unexpectedly went into labor, and the flight attendants sprang into action within seconds. They shuttled carts and chairs aside to create a space and stair-stepped toward a private location, and they also requested passengers to take a break from taking videos. The flight attendants notified the pilots who notified Mumbai’s air traffic control of an emergency priority landing upon arrival. The aircraft landed at 4:02 AM and Mumbai EMS was in place to deal with the situation. Both mother and baby were transported to a nearby hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Air India Express applauded its crew for their quick response and professionalism, stating the event was a “testament to preparedness and compassion.” The airline is now working with the Thai Consulate, as the mother, who was transiting through India to Bangkok, did not possess an Indian visa.
The unusual airborne birth has been greeted with excitement on social media, where some are dubbing it a “miracle of heaven.” The newborn has also been dubbed “Sky” by users, adding flair to aviation news.
However, aviation safety experts are challenging how the woman’s advanced pregnancy was not recognized during boarding. The incident has prompted calls for stronger pre-flight health screening, especially for international travelers.
