New Delhi: On International Nurses Day, people all across the world come together to recognize nurses’ unshakable dedication and important contributions. Celebrated annually on May 12, this day marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing.
Theme for 2025: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies”
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has designated this year’s theme as “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.” The theme highlights the crucial link between the well-being of nurses and the overall strength of healthcare systems and global economies. It highlights how important it is to fund nurses’ professional development, education, and health in order to advance society.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda’s Tribute
India’s Union Health Minister, J.P. Nadda, took to social media to express his gratitude towards nurses. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated:
“Today, on International Nurses Day, we pay tribute to the compassion, strength, and commitment of our nurses. As we reflect on this year’s theme, ‘Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies,’ we recognize that the well-being of nurses is directly linked to the strength of our health systems and national growth.”
He further emphasized the importance of investment in nurses, asserting that such investments would create healthier societies, and more resilient futures.

Nurses often lie at the forefront of healthcare, with the essential services of care and emotional support provided to patients. In terms of patient care, the steps they undertake include assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and education. Nurses also function as advocates, educators, and leaders while fostering efficient lines of communication between healthcare teams and between these teams and the families of patients.
Global Recognition and Challenges
The WHO marked International Nurses Day 2025 by releasing its “State of the World’s Nursing 2025” report. This far-reaching document brings forth the current situation of the nursing workforce, highlighting the issues of workforce shortages, migration, and need for better working conditions.
Dr. Pamela Cipriano, President of the ICN, expressed the importance of supporting the health and well-being of nurses to guarantee that addressing the physical, mental, and emotional challenges would build a sustainable future for healthcare.
