The $2.8 billion Devanahalli facility strengthens Apple’s supply chain diversification while boosting jobs and positioning India as a manufacturing powerhouse.
New Delhi, August 18, 2025
Foxconn has started small-scale production of Apple’s new iPhone 17 which signals a turning point in India’s electronics manufacturing, at its state of the art facility in Devanahalli, Bengaluru. The announcement comes after months of preparation time, and is accompanied by the news of Foxconn announcing a very large $2.8 billion (₹25,000 crore) investment; that makes this its second-largest plant in the world after China, after being announced a year earlier.
The project officially began when the Karnataka government signed an agreement agreement during 2023 with Key apps duly approving the project. The Commencement of Foxconn’s operations in India is expected to provide thousands of jobs and rebranding Devanahalli into a high-tech manufacturing corridor. While Foxconn and Apple have not declared the formal launch, sources in the industry indicate that the manufacturing unit in Bengaluru is already producing for Foxconn’s manufacturing unit in Chennai, which speaks to the further opportunities for India in the Apple supply chain.
Earlier this year, progress briefly slowed after the sudden exit of several Chinese engineers, but Foxconn swiftly deployed experts from Taiwan and other regions to restore operations. Karnataka’s Industries Minister MB Patil had highlighted the plant’s significance, noting that a majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. during the June quarter were manufactured in India, a point recently reinforced by Apple CEO Tim Cook.
The news has created a stir throughout social media with pictures of the enormous campus being widely shared. Analysts see the development as part of Apple’s larger strategy to lessen reliance on China amidst growing geopolitical tensions. If the Bengaluru plant is expanded as anticipated, the city could be positioned alongside Shenzhen as a global electronics manufacturing center, strengthening India’s emergence as a leader in tech manufacturing.
