Cars fall into Mahisagar River; rescue workers in a hurry to rescue buried victims
New Delhi: A tragic incident hit Gujarat on Tuesday morning when the Gambhira Bridge, which links Vadodara and Anand, collapsed unexpectedly, hurling several vehicles into the Mahisagar River. The accident has caused the confirmed loss of at least three lives, with numerous others reported injured.
Rescue efforts were initiated soon after the accident, with both police and fire department teams rushing to the location. Three people have been rescued so far safely from the river, while search and rescue operations are in progress.
Witnesses report 4–5 cars were on the bridge when the collapse occurred. As the bridge collapsed, the cars were swept into the river. Traffic between Vadodara and Anand has been totally disrupted due to the collapse, resulting in several hours of congestion on either side. Commuters are being routed through alternative roads, which means an additional travel distance of almost 40 kilometers.
Gambhira Bridge, which was constructed on the Mahisagar River, was said to be in poor shape for some time. Opposition leader Amit Chavda condemned the government for the accident, posting a video of the destruction on social media and claiming that the administration had been repeatedly informed of the bridge’s poor condition but did not act.
In response, the Gujarat government dispatched technical and medical teams to the spot. The authorities have instructed an inquiry to ascertain the precise reason behind the collapse of the bridge.
This horrific accident has questioned the state’s infrastructure maintenance and public safety seriously.
