Shocking incident raises questions over campus safety in India’s top institutions as authorities launch investigation and activists demand urgent reforms.
Kolkata: 12 July 2025
The Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) is facing a shocking situation after a female student accused a male student of raping her in the boys’ dormitory. In her complaint filed with Haridevpur Police, the survivor alleged she was called in for “counseling” and was provided a drink that the accused had spiked, leaving her unconscious.
The survivor woke up to find herself sexually assaulted. The accused allegedly told her to keep quiet. After reporting the incident to police, they promptly arrested the accused person, and are conducting a thorough investigation. The Institute has not yet made a statement.
This is yet another case that has opened up concerns about student safety in educational institutions, especially in light of a recent case in Kolkata whereby a law student accused some of the former students and pleading from senior students of their institution of gang rape that occurred in the college’s premises. The Calcutta High Court subsequently directed petitioner Kolkata Police to file a progress report of said case in four weeks.
Student unions and women’s rights activists are demanding prompt action and institutional responsibility by demanding safe practices in the programs, revising grievance redressal, and campaigns for awareness on campus.
The fact of these allegations puts IIM – Calcutta in a very litigious light, opening up the question of gender-based violence, even in our countries elite institutions. In taking a public position, authorities are facing a lot of scrutiny and being urged to rectify this situation by making a vigorous prosecution so this kind of behaviour does not persist in India’s educational spaces.
