Rescue teams race against time after a four-story residential structure crumbles in Janta Colony, raising fresh concerns over urban infrastructure safety.
New Delhi: 12 July 2025
On Saturday morning, a four-story residential building in Gali No 5 of Janta Colony, Welcome area of Northeast Delhi collapsed, leading to yet another major rescue operation, and multiple people have been trapped under the debris of the building.
The collapse at about 7 a.m., shook nearby residents awake with a loud noise. According to Delhi Fire Service chief Atul Garg, seven fire tenders were dispatched immediately to the site, joining local residents and morning walkers who were the first to respond.
Eyewitness Asma, a neighbor, recounted the moment of horror: “There was a thunderous noise, and dust filled the air. When I rushed out, I saw our neighbor’s building had completely collapsed.”
So far, eight people have been rescued, including 14-month-old Ahmad, who was rushed to GTB Hospital. Four men and three women were taken to JPC Hospital with varying injuries. Officials suspect that a family of ten occupied the structure in a dense residential area of Delhi, and rescue efforts continue as there are fears that more people are trapped beneath the rubble.
This is the second major building collapse in Delhi this year, and just months after the tragedy in Mustafabad that left four people dead. The cause of this building collapse remains unestablished but nevertheless continues to highlight issues around building safety and structural safety of buildings in older parts of the capital and densely populated areas.
Emergency services are still on the scene as the city waits for news if there are any more victims and what the possible cause of the collapse could be.
