From Kedarnath to Mumbai, torrential rains trigger travel suspensions, dam overflows, and deadly accidents as IMD warns of more intense downpours ahead.
New Delhi, July 7, 2025
Heavy monsoon rains continue to lash many areas of India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to announce red alerts in some states. Ongoing rain has already caused flooding, landslips and serious disruption to everyday life and infrastructure.
The Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily halted in Uttarakhand after landslips damaged foot paths to Gaurikund. Safety of pilgrims is a concern. In Jharkhand, flash floods alerts have been issued across 12 districts including Ranchi and Garhwa, which are already180mm or 157% above normal rainfall totals this monsoon season.
In Nuapada district in Odisha, two women tragically lost their lives after a poultry farm wall collapsed during continuous rainfall. With water levels rising rapidly, authorities have opened 20 sluice gates of Hirakud Dam to manage the swelling Mahanadi River.
Meanwhile, Mumbai and surrounding regions in Madhya Maharashtra are bracing for “extremely heavy” rainfall under a red alert. Similar warnings are in effect for Gujarat, Goa, and Vidarbha, where thunderstorms and lightning have already disrupted transport and power supply.
The Delhi-NCR region experienced rain early this morning, leading to a temporary dip in temperatures, but also heavy waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD expects continued rain in northwest India and heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan.
Efforts are being made to rescue those trapped, with NDRF teams dispatched to the worst-hit regions. Officials are in disaster preparedness mode, as the monsoon shows no sign of letting up, and meteorologists are predicting very heavy rainfall across a wide area of India, particularly for the next 48 hours in Chhattisgarh and parts of the Northeast.
This disaster emphasizes the ongoing need to improve disaster preparation as India experiences arguably one of the heaviest monsoons on record.
