The RCB legend stands on the edge of an unbroken record as Kohli is just one knock away from becoming the first player ever to breach the 8500-run mark in the league.

New Delhi: RCB’s star batter Virat Kohli is just 53 runs short of writing history in the Indian Premier League (IPL). All eyes will be on Kohli when RCB meets Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 52nd match of IPL 2025 at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, as he is about to become the world’s first player to score 8500 runs in the IPL.

Kohli has been in phenomenal touch this year, making major contributions to the performance of RCB. The former RCB captain has scored 443 runs with a strike rate of 138.87 and six half-centuries in 10 games thus far. His ability to anchor the innings and his consistency have been crucial to RCB’s success this season.

Kohli currently has 8447 runs in 262 IPL games, with an astounding average of 39.47. He is already the top run-scorer in IPL history and has broken a number of records since his debut in 2008. Kohli is distinguished not only by the sheer number of runs but also by his loyalty—he is the only player to have played for the same franchise, RCB, in all seasons since the league’s launch.

In his IPL career, Kohli made 8 centuries and 61 fifties, reflecting his capacity to play explosive and anchor innings. He has scored 744 fours and 285 sixes, reflecting his varied stroke play and power-hitting capability.

In the list of top run-scorers in the IPL, Kohli leads by a massive margin. Rohit Sharma is at second with 6868 runs. The five-time IPL champion skipper of the Mumbai Indians is still a major player in the competition and will next play against Rajasthan Royals.

With 6769 runs during his IPL career, Shikhar Dhawan is ranked third. He will retire from Indian cricket in all forms in August 2024. Dhawan was a steady performer in the league, particularly while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings.

David Warner, yet another IPL legend, occupies the fourth position with 6565 runs. The former captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad led his team to an IPL title in 2016, but he was not sold at the 2025 mega-auction. Warner is playing in some other T20 league at the moment.

Suresh Raina, with 5528 runs, completes the top five list. A cornerstone of Chennai Super Kings’ domination all these years, Raina has retired from IPL ahead of the 2023 season.

  • Virat Kohli 8447 runs
  • Rohit Sharma 6868 runs

As RCB gets ready for a make-or-break battle against CSK, cricket enthusiasts will be waiting with bated breath for Virat Kohli, on the cusp of achieving yet another record—becoming the first player ever to score 8500 IPL runs. Will tonight be the evening he writes himself into IPL history even further?
