NICT scientists achieve a massive leap in data transmission using existing fiber optic technology, paving the way for 6G, AI, and future digital infrastructure.

In a breakthrough scientific development, Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has achieved an unprecedented speed of 1.02 petabits per second equivalent to 10.20 lakh Gbps. The implications of this research achievement are massive it is not just impressive from a science perspective, but it has the potential to reshape how the world connects and processes information. For some context, this internet speed could potentially download the entire Netflix library in one second, or it could potentially allow millions of HD video streams simultaneously without buffering. The additional excitement about this experiment is that the research team was able to use modified versions of existing fibre optic infrastructure, rather than building an entirely new system.
The high-tech experiment used four-core optical fibres with wavelength division multiplexing in conjunction with sending data through over 50 different light wavelengths combined. Even though the researchers were sending data at an enormous speed, the system was still able to function over a distance of 51.7 kilometres.
The network isn’t available for home use currently, but experts say we are on the road to enabling 6G networks with this technology, AI applications nationwide, expanding broadband, and the next-generation of undersea cables. Governments, telecommunications giants or data centers have taken note of this breakthrough technology that could change the way we connect to the world.
