In the rapidly evolving digital world we live in today, our eyes have become one of the most stressed organs in the body. From long days at the computer to endless scrolling on our smartphones, it is no surprise that eye health deteriorates at an accelerated rate. Some offending vision issues may be hereditary or age-related, but perhaps inordinate habits create weaknesses in our eyes.
Here are a handful of typical habits that may actively diminish your eyes health
1. Spending Too Much Time on Screens
The biggest culprit of eye fatigue in modern times is extended time on a screen. Whether for business or pleasure, many of us end up spending hours staring at our computers, tablets, or smartphones. This results in “digital eye strain,” which is symptomatic of eye fatigue, dry eyes, headaches, and blurry vision. In addition, screen light emits blue light, which can disrupt our sleep patterns, which further influences eye health.
2. No Proper Lighting
Reading or working in dimly lit areas strains and irritates the eyes. Alternatively, too much light—the light from a screen, for example—can create glare, which is equally damaging.
3. Not using sunglasses

Sleeping in your contact lenses is a common yet dangerous behavior. You might temporarily relieve eye dryness or irritation by sleeping in them, but you are risking your eye health and could create more serious symptoms like a corneal ulcer or eye infection.

7. Rubbing Your Eyes
Rubbing the eyes might feel good, but it may be causing more harm. Rubbing will weaken the cornea and spread germs to the eye. It can also be the cause of dark circles under the eyes.
8. Overusing Eye Drops
Over-the-counter eye drops can temporarily relieve red or dry eyes, but excessive use can lead to over-reliance on eye drops and cause the eyes to become even dryer without drops.
9. Smoking
Smoking is harmful to health overall, and that includes the health of the eye. Smoking increases the incidence of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and damage to the optic nerve.
10. Neglecting Hydration
Being dehydrated can cause dry eyes, which can be uncomfortable and can cause long-term damage if left untreated.
Eye health is critical for quality of life, yet we often take it for granted until we experience problems. Realizing the above habits can provide awareness, and small changes can help keep the eyes healthy for years.
