Board says focus is on Asia Cup and T20 World Cup prep, not farewell plans for veteran stars.
New Delhi, August 11, 2025
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved to quell speculation over the ODI futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, following reports hinting at their possible retirement after India’s October tour of Australia. A senior BCCI source stressed that the board’s immediate priority is preparation for the Asia Cup and next year’s T20 World Cup, not making early calls on the veterans’ careers.
The rumours began after a media report claimed Kohli and Rohit might need to play domestic Vijay Hazare Trophy matches to stay eligible for selection until the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, a stipulation that could influence their decisions. The BCCI dismissed talk of any planned farewell, including rumours of a send-off match during the October 25 ODI in Sydney against Australia.
Both players last turned out for India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year and have not played competitively since the IPL. With the Asia Cup T20 tournament kicking off in September, the board insists that player fitness and short-term tournament readiness are the current priorities. Officials also emphasised that any eventual transition will be handled with care, recognising Kohli and Rohit’s monumental contributions and enduring fan base.
