Trump Alleges He Averted Nuclear War Between India and Pakistan

At White House event, Trump claims personal intervention stopped deadly escalation but offers no evidence or timeline

New Delhi, July 23, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy with bold assertions about his foreign policy role this time claiming he personally averted a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan.

Speaking at a White House gathering of Republican lawmakers on July 22, Trump said his intervention stopped a major military escalation between the two nuclear-armed nations. “They’re both powerful nuclear countries… and that would have happened. And I stopped it,” Trump stated, alleging that five military aircraft had already been shot down in cross-border clashes before he stepped in.

According to Trump, his economic threats telling both nations, “No more trade if you continue” compelled them to de-escalate. However, he offered no specifics regarding the timeline of the alleged incident, and no independent verification or official reports support his version of events.

This is at least the third time in recent weeks that Trump has referenced a supposed role in India-Pakistan diplomacy. His remarks take place amid his re-election campaign where he continues to compare his leadership with President Joe Biden and represent himself as a stabilizer in the world.

Some security analysts maintain skepticism and noted that while India and Pakistan have raised tensions, especially from the 2019 Pulwama attack, there is no recent evidence of large-scale aerial fighting or near nuclear escalation.

It is unclear if Trump’s comments suggest reference to a classified diplomatic incident or were an embellishment. But because of the combustible nature of India-Pakistan relations, the statement is drawing attention in both diplomatic and defense circles, even though there is no evidence to support it.
