‘Karisma Couldn’t Fit into His World’: Suneel Darshan Discusses Her Marriage to Sunjay Kapur
Filmmaker Suneel Darshan has made a striking revelation about Karisma Kapoor’s past, calling her 2003 marriage to businessman Sunjay Kapur an “abrupt decision” following her broken engagement with Abhishek Bachchan. In a recent interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Darshan revealed that while Karisma longed for a simple, grounded life, she found herself misplaced in Sunjay’s elite Delhi circle.
“She was placed into a world that was not hers,” Darshan said. “Delhi has a culture, and Karisma couldn’t fit into it.” Darshan, who worked with her at the peak of her fame, called the actress “sweet and grounded”, noting that she struggled to find comfort in a lifestyle driven by affluence and formality.
Karisma and Sunjay Kapur, which at one point in time seemed like a fairytale, ended in divorce in 2016 after having multiple years of alleged problems. Sunjay died in June 2025 from what was reported as a heart attack caused by a bee sting.
Darhsan’s frank response has reignited the conversation on the emotional burden many celebrities face when trying to balance their personal wishes and the expectations of the public, particularly in high-profile marriages that devolve under societal pressures and cultural differences.
