Model and activist who challenged beauty standards and advocated for women’s rights mourned by fashion and social justice communities.
New Delhi: 14 July 2025
The fashion world and social justice circles are reeling from the untimely death of San Rechal Gandhi, former Miss Puducherry and outspoken campaigner against colourism, who tragically died by suicide at age 26. Gandhi passed away on Saturday after battling for nine days at JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry following an overdose on sleeping pills on July 5.
Gandhi captured history in Indian beauty by rejecting a prejudicial fair-skin standard. She gained prominence as Miss Dark Queen Tamil Nadu in 2019, a title she used to combat colorist beauty standards and went on to become Miss Puducherry 2021, earning international recognition. Her international exposure which included being in many fashion shows in London, Germany, and France – was substantial, and she adopted the role of a renowned face of inclusivity and representation of women of color on an international runway.
And her activism would be deeper. She would carry the duty of a fearless advocate for women’s safety, speaking to gender injustice and using her emerging platform to contribute to issues concerning marginalized groups.
According to police sources, an investigation is ongoing into the circumstances of her death, including claims of emotional difficulties which appear to stem from personal issues following her recent marriage. Although Gandhi lost her mother when she was young, she was raised by a father who was supportive of her and devoted to her career.
Her death has sparked a renewed call for mental health resources within the modeling and entertainment industries which place a lot of stress on young public figures. Gandhi’s fans, followers and activists are remembering her for much more than being a model, they are remembering her for being a changemaker with the courage to challenge all concepts of beauty.
