Final trials underway on the 82-km RRTS corridor; NCRTC gears up to launch high-speed metro-integrated service pending safety nod
New Delhi: 14 June 2025
The Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is on track to become fully operational by late June or early July, marking a transformative leap in India’s urban mobility landscape. The corridor extends 82 km from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut and is currently undergoing final trial runs. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will soon inspect it for final approval.
The RRTS is designed to allow commuters to travel from Delhi to Meerut in under 60 minutes, providing metro-like convenience over a larger regional area, within a timeframe comparable to commuting from Gurgaon to Connaught Place.
The project started in 2019 and has been implemented in phases; a 55 km stretch is operating and another 4.5 km in Delhi (along with 23 km in Meerut) is in advanced trial stages. The Meerut Metro is integrated, and a 27-km part of that is also expected to start operating at the same time, once safety approvals are received.
Trains can run as fast as 160 km/h but this semi-high speed system is meant to help relieve road congestion, enhance regional connectivity across NCR and set a benchmark for other transit projects around the nation. It is a progressive milestone in India’s sustainable and contemporary public transportation system.
