Nitish Kumar announces 125 units free power for households starting August 1; solar push also unveiled
New Delhi: 17 July 2025
In a major election year announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stated that domestic consumers will be provided up to 125 units of free electricity every month from 1 August 2025. It is expected that the move will benefit about 1.67 crore households and is being hailed as a major pro-people move with the state assembly elections only a few months away.
Announcing the scheme on social media platform X, Kumar said the Bihar government has consistently worked to ensure affordable and uninterrupted electricity, and the new policy continues that mission. Consumers will not be billed for electricity usage under 125 units for the July billing cycle onward.
Moreover, Kumar announced a bold plan to make provisions for solar power plants for domestic use on the roof or nearby within three years, which will align with Bihar’s renewable energy and green infrastructure priorities. Political analysts believe that this is a populist approach by the ruling JD(U)-BJP coalition to keep voters and countering the opposition’s momentum. Similar welfare schemes have been deployed in other states during election cycles, although concerns remain about the fiscal burden on Bihar’s power sector, which already struggles with subsidy payouts and rising costs.
The opposition has not officially responded yet, but the announcement is expected to be a central topic in the coming pre-poll debates and manifestos.
