3.2 magnitude tremor at shallow depth sparks brief panic but no damage reported
New Delhi, July 22, 2025:
A mild earthquake in Delhi-NCR on Tuesday morning around 6 AM registered at the Richter scale 3.2, near the city of Faridabad, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremors lasted several seconds and dealt a jolt to anxious calls from residents of South Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 5 km, with coordinates of 28.29°N latitude and 72.21°E longitude. There was no reported loss of life and no reported loss of property, but the tremors caused a moment of panic – especially for some residents or home dwellers of high-rise buildings.
It was the third mild tremor in the Delhi-NCR region in 2025, and has revived long-held fears about the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Many have known for years about Delhi’s proximity to a seismic zone. Delhi occupies a unique whirlpool location in Seismic Zone IV susceptible to earthquakes [from the Himalayan fault lines] making it amongst one of the most earthquake prone metros in India. A property for the Ministry of Earth Sciences had warned of possible major earthquakes > 6.5 magnitude.
The concern for our collective safety has prompted officials are asking residents to stay calm and remain prepared. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) reminded residents to check the contents of their emergency kit and review their safety plans, while NDMA stated that they will monitor for aftershocks as well.
