ONDC Launches Interoperable QR Code: A Game-Changer for Indian E-commerce Companies

#Empowering Sellers and Revolutionizing Business in India

New Delhi | July 32, 2024:

Imagine a world where small business owners struggle to compete in the digital marketplace, losing out to bigger players primarily because they lack the means to reach customers. This has been the reality for countless vendors in India. Today, the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has launch its revolutionary Interoperable QR Code, poised to transform the e-commerce landscape and empower every seller, from local artisans to neighborhood shopkeepers.

For a long time, vendors have faced significant challenges in establishing their presence in the digital market. They have been dependent on specific platforms and constrained by their limitations, struggling to reach a broader audience. The ONDC Interoperable QR Code is set to change all that. Currently in its alpha stage, this innovative tool allows sellers to create a unique QR code that customers can scan using ONDC-registered buyer apps. The initial rollout is starting with Magicpin and Paytm, with plans to expand across the entire network following initial testing.

At the launch event, ONDC’s MD and CEO, T. Koshy, unveiled the QR code, stating, “Today marks a pivotal moment in Indian commerce. The ONDC Interoperable QR Code breaks down the barriers that have held small businesses back. Now, every seller has the digital power to reach customers just like e-commerce giants. This is a significant leap towards an open, inclusive, and democratic digital market.”

The beauty of this technology lies in its simplicity and potential for far-reaching impact. Sellers can display their QR code anywhere—on storefronts, products, marketing materials, or social media—connecting with customers both offline and online instantly. For consumers, it means unmatched convenience: scanning the code with any QR scanner app or the ONDC buyer app (currently Paytm and Magicpin) links them directly to the seller’s online store via their preferred buyer app.

“Think about the local shopkeeper, street vendor, or artisan—now, anyone can find them and buy their product from anywhere,” Koshy added. “This is not just a new feature; it’s a technology that fosters economic growth and digital inclusion. Millions of businesses will come online, creating new opportunities and advancing India’s digital economy.”

Prior to ONDC’s Interoperable QR Code, many vendors were either not online due to the high costs of demand generation or were paying a substantial portion of their revenue. Now, with this game-changing tool, they can grow affordably.

This alpha launch represents a significant shift in the way business is conducted in India. It’s more than just technology; it’s about transforming the lives of every vendor in the country and providing equal opportunities for all. The ONDC Interoperable QR Code is the key to unlocking this new era of digital commerce, where opportunities are no longer limited by size or resources.

With the ONDC network, India is now open for business for everyone!
