Celebrating Chhath Puja: A Festival with Roots in Ancient India’s Greatest Epics

Chhath Puja is a magnificent event that has origins in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, as well as in the recent 100 to 200 years. Let’s examine the underlying ancient legendary tale.

New Delhi: 7th November 2024

Chhath celebrations began on November 5 with the initial bathing ceremony, leading to the observance of Kharna on November 6, 2024. The fortunate end of Chhath is marked by the evening Arghya on November 7 and the morning Arghya on November 8. The history of the Chhath festival extends beyond the present to the Ramayana and Mahabharata periods. Let’s examine the relationship between the Chhath festival and the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Chhath’s Relation to the Ramayana

When Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years, he reportedly followed the sages’ advice and performed the Rajasuya Yajna to atone for the sin of slaying Ravana. Rishi Mudgal received a phone call inviting him to the yajna. However, Rishi Mudgal urged Lord Rama and Mata Sita to come to his ashram instead of accepting the invitation. To purify Mata Sita, Rishi Mudgal sprinkled her with Ganga water when they arrived at the ashramOn the sixth day of Shukla Paksha, Mata Sita worshipped the Sun God and observed the Chhath fast as directed by Rishi Mudgal.

Connection Between Chhath Puja and the Mahabharat Era

According to mythology, Draupadi observed the Chhath fast after the Pandavas lost everything in a dice game. Her request was granted when she fasted, and the Pandavas reclaimed their empire. Another theory is that the Chhath festival has been observed since the Mahabharata period.
The Chhath festival is said to have been founded by Karna, the Sun God’s son. Karna was an ardent follower of the Sun God. It is said that Karna would stand in water for a long time every day to sacrifice Arghya to the Sun God. Karna rose to prominence as a warrior after receiving Surya Dev’s blessings.

Most people in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand celebrate Chhath. However, because of its significance, this holiday is today celebrated not only in India, but also in other countries. This intensely devout event is celebrated by people of various faiths, not only Hindus.
