New Delhi: What role will young Indians play in shaping the country’s democracy and future? This question formed the centre of discussion at ‘Acharshala’, organised by the Office of the Dean Students’ Welfare at the University of Delhi.
Held at the Tagore Auditorium, Faculty of Arts, the programme focused on the theme “Youth, Democracy and the Future of India.” Around 140 students and 20 faculty members participated in the discussion, which explored democracy, responsible citizenship, national development and the role of young people in nation-building.
The programme was attended by Shri Nitin Pramod, I.F.S., Director, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, as the Chief Guest. Prof. Bharatendu Pandey, Head of the Department of Sanskrit, University of Delhi, was the Guest of Honour, while Prof. Ranjan Kumar Tripathi, Dean, Students’ Welfare, University of Delhi, chaired the event.
In his keynote address, Shri Nitin Pramod spoke about the importance of an independent press and well-informed citizens in maintaining a healthy democracy. He discussed India’s aspirations to become a developed nation and pointed to good governance, education, infrastructure and civic participation as important factors in this journey.
Addressing the younger generation directly, he urged students to remain alert to corruption in their daily lives and to develop a stronger understanding of geography and global political developments. He concluded by reminding the audience that India’s ambition of becoming a Vishwa Guru by 2047 would be shaped by the vision and actions of today’s youth.
Prof. Bharatendu Pandey brought attention to India’s classical intellectual heritage and its relevance in the modern democratic world. He encouraged students to work towards personal growth, maintain discipline and participate actively in the country’s development.
The event ended with a vote of thanks, leaving students with new perspectives on their responsibilities as citizens. Through interactions with experienced diplomats and academics, the programme created a meaningful space for young people to reflect on democracy and their role in building India’s future.
