Focus on lithium, defence, energy, and trade as India and Argentina seek deeper cooperation during Modi’s landmark South America tour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Buenos Aires on Friday, beginning a two-day history-making bilateral tour the first visit by an Indian prime minister in Argentina over 57 years. This visit is expected to be a partnership that will help to unlock new opportunities for cooperation in key areas for both countries, including agriculture, defence cooperation, critical minerals, energy, and overall trade.
At the close of this two-day visit, it is expected that PM Modi and Argentine President Javier Milei will establish crucial strategic partnerships, particularly focused on lithium extraction and supply as this mineral is key in electric vehicle battery and clean energy technologies. Given India’s push to green-transition, and Argentina’s aggressive aim to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) as it embarks on an overhaul of its economy, this engagement is highly strategic for both sides.
This marks the third leg of PM Modi’s five-nation tour, following a successful visit to Trinidad and Tobago where he was conferred the nation’s highest civilian award and ahead of his appearance at the upcoming BRICS Summit in Brazil.
Sources indicate that the leaders may explore a collaborative initiative in the domain of space technology, given the two prior agreements between India’s ISRO and Argentina’s CONAE space agency during President Milei’s trip to India last year.
Since Argentina has some of the largest lithium reserves in the world and India is on the cusp of a manufacturing juggernaut, this visit could be transformative to shape these critical mineral supply chains and next-gen defence ties.
The historic trip not only represents the growing significance of South-South cooperation, but reflects a bold diplomatic manoeuvre as both countries knowingly shift effective alliances in a turbulent world economy.
