As the timeless Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi comes back to Star Plus with an all-new cast and an all-new look, Anupamaa star Rupali Ganguly has gracefully and respectably addressed the inevitable comparisons. In a recent interview, Ganguly emphasized that while both shows focus on family themes, they belong to distinct eras of Indian television.
“Both shows have their own identity. Kyunki… was a phenomenon of its time, just like Anupamaa resonates with today’s viewers. It’s not about competition,” she said, acknowledging producer Ektaa Kapoor’s gracious remarks about Anupamaa earlier.
Ganguly’s role as Anupamaa has become a staple household name, consistently breaking through the TRP charts. She said she takes pride in reviving Kyunki…, which she felt was a nostalgic moment for both Star Plus and a generation of viewers. “It’s an iconic show that holds a special place in all our hearts,” she noted.
The reboot, which premiered July 29 at 10:30 PM, has been strategically scheduled to avoid overlapping with Anupamaa, which airs at 10 PM. Media and fans had speculated about potential rivalry, but Kapoor and Ganguly both clarified there’s room for multiple powerful female-led narratives on Indian TV.
Television critics agree. While Kyunki… reflects the emotional, dramatic storytelling of the early 2000s, Anupamaa explores modern-day issues like independence, self-worth, and resilience. Together, they demonstrate how Indian family dramas have evolved across decades.
