5 Times Kashmir Bled: Timeline of Major Terror Attacks

The tragedy in Pahalgam has revived memories of horrific massacres from years past.
New Delhi: Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir — The beautiful town turned into a site of horror during one of the deadliest terror attacks in recent years, on Tuesday, terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists, killing at least 27 and injuring more than 20 civilians. The incident has not only sent shockwaves across the country but also revived memories of other past terrorist acts carried out in Jammu and Kashmir.
Currently, the Pahalgam attack has been regarded as the most intense strike on Indian soil after the 2019 Pulwama attack in which 44 CRPF personnel were killed. Yet again, it confirms that such acts are not mere attacks on Kashmir, but also on the unity and sovereignty of India.
Five Major Terror Attacks in Jammu and Kashmir
- October 2024 – Tunnel Site Attack – In Mulla Miyan area, terrorists stormed a construction site where a tunnel was being built. Six migrant workers and a doctor were killed in the assault. The incident was claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), which is a Pakistan-centric terrorist group. The attack disrupted development activities as it pointed to the kind of vulnerability migrant workers have in conflict zones.
- June 2024 – Attack on Pilgrims’ Bus In one incident, a Hindu pilgrims’ bus was attacked. The bus plunged into a gorge, killing nine and injuring 33 others, raising alarming questions about pilgrim safety in Jammu and Kashmir.
- February 2019: Pulwama Suicide Bombing A suicide bomber attacked a convoy of CRPF men in the district of Pulwama on February 14, killing 44 personnel. According to reports, the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility. The attack became a major flashpoint in Indo-Pak relations by becoming one of the worst cases of terrorism against India.
- July 10, 2017- Attack on Amarnath Yatra, the attack was on a bus carrying Amarnath pilgrims, to which terrorists opened fire killing seven people. The attack targeted communal harmony and outraged people across the country.
- September 2016: Uri Army Base Attack The attack on an Indian Army base in Uri killed 17 soldiers and prompted a strong military response in the form of surgical strikes across the Line of Control.
