New Delhi: 14 July 2025

A heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded in the national capital as 19-year-old Sneha Debnath, a second-year B.Sc Mathematics student at Delhi University’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, was found dead in the Yamuna River on Sunday, ending a six-day-long search operation. Hailing from Tripura, Sneha had gone missing on July 7 under puzzling circumstances, leaving her South Delhi residence after informing her mother she was accompanying a friend to a railway station. However, she instead took a cab to Signature Bridge her last known location.

Investigators learned that a cab driver dropped her off directly at the bridge, and witnesses saw a distressed young woman arrive shortly thereafter. The area didn’t have vast coverage of CCTV, therefore the Delhi Police and the NDRF conducted huge searches covering many kilometres down the Yamuna River, before finding her body, on the other side of Geeta Colony.

The coverage of the event intensified following the involvement of the Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, who took a personal interest in the matter of Sneha beseeching Delhi police to hasten the investigation. Thus when the police were told that there were fears that foul play was afoot, after the family lost contact with her, this aroused a sense of urgency and potential sensational exposure.

This event has sparked a new level of anxiety around student safety (especially students studying away from home). Signature Bridge is already considered a suicide location, and has again, grown a bad reputation in terms of lack of monitoring or protection. The tragedy also ignited renewed calls for professional mental health support systems, hospitalisation access, at universities, and safety systems at public vulnerable places. Additionally, as investigation remains adrift, Sneha’s death serves to highlight the emotional/physical barriers urban students encounter, including powerful, systemic barriers.
