Television history is about to repeat itself, with a twist: Smriti Irani is making a special return as Tulsi Virani in the much-hyped return of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. After an absence of 17 years from television, the former actress-turned-MP is revisiting the role that made her famous and it’s likely to provoke reminiscence for generations of viewers.
In a newly released promo by Star Plus, Irani appears in her iconic purple and gold saree, watering a tulsi plant a familiar symbol from the original series before turning to the camera and declaring:
“Zaroor aaoongi, kyuki humara 25 saalon ka rishta jo hai. “Waqt aagaya hai aapse phir milne ka.”
With those five words, excitement has been rekindled for numerous fans of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, many of whom grew up watching the daily show and the record-breaking run from 2000-2008.
The reboot premieres on July 29 at 10:30 PM on Star Plus and is also available on JioHotstar, and while still promising the emotional depth the show is rewbooted to adapted for a younger audience, this new take on the mother of all family dramas is for all audiences, both loyal Kyunki fans and those seeing the Virani family for the first time. As far as the plot go, details remain undisclosed, but the indication is a reimaging of the adventures, trials, and tribulations of the same Virani family while establishing new storylines, new family dynamics, and new takes on the importance of family in this day and age.
As Smriti Irani stated in reflecting on the time already gone and time returning, Kyunki… “reshaped my own life” and has forged a relationship with “millions of homes.” Her resuming this relationship is not a return in the traditional sense, but a homage to the brand, the family drama, the return to epic moments of entertainment in the context of Indian television and television as a whole.
Kyunki is produced once again by Ekta Kapoor, and serves to tie the collective experience of Indian TV back to a whole character with originality, evolution, and reinvention; and that sometimes the significance of coming home is the strongest narrative of them all.
