Tragic Fire in Kanpur: 5 Family Members Killed in Blaze at Five-Storey Building

CM Yogi Adityanath expresses deep grief, orders probe and swift relief; youngest daughter found clinging to mother as fire guts building
A horrifying fire broke out late Sunday night in a five-storey residential building in the Gandhinagar area of Chamanganj, Kanpur, resulting in the deaths of five members of a single family—a couple and their three daughters. The victims were trapped on the top floor as flames and smoke rapidly consumed the building.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and helplessness. They reported hearing desperate screams from inside the burning apartment as thick smoke and flames engulfed the structure. The fire spread so fast that the top floor was consumed within 15 minutes of ignition. In a heart-wrenching discovery, officials said the youngest daughter was found clinging to her mother’s body once the fire was brought under control.
The blaze is believed to have started due to a short circuit in a shoe factory operating on the ground floor. From there, it quickly spread to the upper floors of the building, which housed multiple families. Residents from nearby buildings fled with their children, fearing further explosions. The blasts were reportedly so intense that windows and doors of several surrounding flats were blown out.
Emergency teams responded swiftly, deploying 30 fire tenders and a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) unit from Lucknow, which arrived around 2 AM. However, narrow lanes and dense construction severely hampered rescue operations. A 200-metre radius around the building was evacuated, with families from at least six nearby buildings shifted to safer locations overnight. Additionally, a 500-metre perimeter was cordoned off to ensure public safety.
The building was home to the families of three brothers. While firefighters managed to rescue four individuals from the third floor and three from the fourth using ladders, they could not reach the fifth floor in time to save the victim’s family. Over 20 people in total were rescued.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Rajesh Srivastava confirmed the fatalities and the scale of the operation, which lasted nearly seven hours. Several people who suffered severe burn injuries are currently being treated at Ursula Hospital’s burn unit.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offered condolences to the bereaved families, and directed officials to provide the best possible medical care to the injured. He also called for a thorough investigation and swift action against those responsible.
The tragedy has reignited serious concerns over the safety of running industrial units within residential buildings and the negligence of fire and electrical safety standards. Local residents and civic groups are demanding accountability and stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent such disasters in the future.
