Dheeraj Kansal, 25, leaves behind dual suicide notes as case highlights rising urban stress and easy access to lethal substances
New Delhi, July 30, 2025
In a deeply unsettling incident, 25-year-old chartered accountant Dheeraj Kansal was found dead in a central Delhi Airbnb rental on Monday, in what police say is the first recorded helium-inhalation suicide in the city. Kansal had checked into the guesthouse near Bengali Market on July 20, and his body was discovered with a helium cylinder and a plastic-wrapped head, indicating a carefully planned act.
Authorities recovered two suicide notes one posted to his Facebook account and another handwritten copy left at the scene. Both messages claimed the decision was made independently and requested that Kansal’s assets be donated to charity.
According to police, Kansal was orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandparents. He had bought the helium tank online, with Ghaziabad being the location of the transaction, which raised the question about the uncontrolled sale of dangerous products.
Experts in mental health have noted the rise of what they call “helium suicides,” which are not only painless, but also a very planned way to end one’s life, mainly by young professionals in urban settings who experience distance from their social institutions, pressure from work, or burnout when they did not expect it.
The current case marks the fourth suicide amongst young professionals in Delhi so far this quarter. It further complicates and emphasizes the need for mental health resources, workplace support systems, and online retail policies regulating sales of harmful products.
Authorities are currently investigating Kansal’s online history and through his financial transactions. Helplines are reminding individuals looking for assistance to reach out to mental health helplines like iCall (022-25521111) or the Vandrevala Foundation (9999666555) when it is still possible to do so.
