Anxiety and stress are becoming common concerns for many people in today’s fast-paced society. Although some stress is normal, chronic stress can damage one’s physical and emotional health. Fortunately, there are simple and effective approaches to managing and reducing anxiety and stress.
Here are some helpful tips to help you stay cool when faced with obstacles in life.
1. Get enough sleep
Sleep deprivation has been shown to greatly increase stress and anxiety. Prioritize proper sleep by having a consistent bedtime routine, creating a relaxing sleep environment, and avoiding electronics before bedtime. Aim for 7-9 hours of good sleep per night to help your body and mind recuperate from the day’s challenges.
2. Practice mindful breathing
One of the quickest ways to let go of stress is by simply focusing on the breath. Deep breathing will relax your nervous system and lower anxiety. Try taking slow, deep breaths, inhaling through your nose, holding for a few seconds, and then exhaling slowly through your mouth. Even a few minutes of mindful breathing every day can have a huge impact.

3. Do things you love

Avoid sugary, processed foods, or caffeine and sweet treats that will make a bad mood even worse. Keeping well-hydrated is also very important for mental and physical well-being alike.
5. Stay connected
To a very large extent, the management of stress depends on social support. Discussing your problems with your friends or family members will make you feel better and let you see things in clearer light. Even a very minor conversation with a loved one, no matter how inconsequential it may seem, may make you feel more supported and not so alone anymore. If visits are impossible, at least reach out to the person through telephone, video call, and even text.

6. Regular Physical Activity
Exercise is an excellent stress buster. The activity increases the speed of production of endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators. Exercise also promotes good sleep, which is essential for stress management.
