New Delhi/Kolkata: Women across West Bengal can now travel free of cost on all state-operated buses as the newly elected BJP government begins implementing one of its key election promises.
The government officially launched the scheme on June 1, making it one of the first major welfare measures introduced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s administration.
The initiative will benefit millions of women, including students, working professionals, homemakers, and senior citizens. By eliminating bus fares, the government aims to reduce daily transportation costs and improve women’s access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
How the Scheme Works
Women can obtain zero-value (free) tickets by presenting a valid photo identity card, such as an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, Driving License, PAN Card, or Passport.
In the coming weeks, the government will also issue special QR-code enabled smart cards through local Block Development Offices (BDO) or Sub-Divisional Offices (SDO). These cards will make commuting even more seamless.
This scheme covers all state-operated buses run by the WBTC, SBSTC, NBSTC, and other similar departments.
Key Election Promises from BJP
This promise of free bus travel was a key component of the BJP’s 2026 election manifesto. The government asserts that this initiative will enhance women’s mobility, safety, and freedom. Daily commuting students, working women, and homemakers can now save hundreds or even thousands of rupees every month.
Alongside this initiative, the ‘Annapurna Bhandar Yojana’ is being launched, under which a monthly financial assistance of ₹3,000 will be provided directly into the bank accounts of eligible women. The scheme is set to replace the previous ‘Lakshmi Bhandar Yojana’, and benefits are expected to be extended to a large number of women across the state.
Happy Reactions from Women
On the first day, many women commuters were delighted. In places like Darjeeling and Siliguri, women said it would make daily travel to schools, colleges, hospitals, and workplaces much easier and cheaper. Several called it a real step towards women’s empowerment. BJP leaders described it as “Nari Shakti” in action.
Some Concerns and Challenges
Despite widespread appreciation, some experts and transport officials have raised concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of this scheme.
Currently, the number of state-run buses in West Bengal falls significantly short of meeting the total passenger demand. According to estimates, approximately 400,000 women across the state could potentially avail themselves of this facility on a daily basis; consequently, transport experts have warned that overcrowding on buses could escalate significantly, particularly during peak hours.
In Kolkata alone, officials estimate that this program could benefit approximately 180,000 women daily. This surge in passenger numbers could place additional strain on the existing public transport infrastructure, unless more buses are added to the fleet.
Government defends the Initiative
The West Bengal government has defended the program, saying it reflects its commitment to inclusive development and women’s empowerment.
Officials say the scheme aims to improve the standard of living for women. They also describe it as a step toward fulfilling promises made during the election campaign.
The administration has said it will closely monitor transport services. If passenger demand rises significantly, it may introduce additional measures to manage the increase.
With free bus travel now available for women across West Bengal, attention will turn to its long-term impact. The program’s success will depend on effective implementation and regular monitoring. It will also require stronger transport infrastructure and careful financial planning.
