After much wait, Anurag Basu’s film Metro…In Dino opened well at the box office, grossing a total of ₹16.75 crore in its opening weekend. With a stellar ensemble cast that includes Sara Ali Khan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma, the romantic drama opened at ₹3.5 crore on Friday, and saw a 71% surge to ₹6 crore on Saturday, and a further ₹7.25 crore on Sunday.

Evening show occupancy touched 57% which indicates strong interest, particularly for urban multiplexes. Metro…In Dino is pitched as a spiritual sequel to Basu’s acclaimed 2007 film, Life…In A Metro. This film similarly rests heavily on Pritam’s soulful music and provides a multilayered film analyzing relationships in modern society.

While some critiques pointed to disconnects between the myriad storylines in the film, the audience response has been largely favorable. The fact that there is no major Bollywood release coming the following week indicates that, according to trade analysts, Metro…In Dino stands to keep a consistent pace at the box office and may likely make back its ₹50 crore budget during the week, if it continues to keep traction during the weekdays in theatres.

The early box office returns may also indicate an encouraging rebirth for the romantic drama genre in India, which has not produced much box office activity over the past few years. It will all come down to how word-of-mouth and consumption behaviours will influence the viability of carrying its audience over the next week, especially in urban centres.
