First Lady Melania Trump is getting increasingly negative attention from the public over her response to the catastrophic floods in Texas that already caused at least 67 fatalities, including 21 children. Her message offering “thoughts and prayers” via social media was quickly panned as inadequate and out of touch in spite of the Trump administration’s deep cutbacks to disaster preparedness and environmental monitoring programs.

Fueling the outrage were viral clips of Melania seen dancing at a White House event just hours before the floods struck a juxtaposition many have labeled insensitive and poorly timed.

Experts have pointed to the 2024 rollback of NOAA’s storm tracking budget, which may have delayed vital early warnings. The survivors, as well as lawmakers are questioning the administration’s cuts to FEMA funding, saying that with more resources and better preparation the devastation could have been less. The disaster has resurfaced a national debate over climate policy and emergency preparedness, with critics demanding accountability and action on reforms. Democratic leaders are calling for federal relief for flood victims, as well as investment to help communities adapt and become more resilient to climate change, and warned that extreme weather events are becoming more common and more lethal.

Elena, with her message of symbolic intent, has become an important person in a broader conversation about political leadership, empathy and the effects of inaction, as recovery teams continue to sift through the wreckage of the destroyed summer camp.
