Sweeping legislation expands tax cuts and military funding but slashes welfare, sparking political backlash and concerns over rising debt.
5 July 2025, New Delhi
President Donald Trump turned this yearโs Independence Day into a political showpiece, signing his much-debated โOne Big Beautiful Billโ into law during a grand July 4th ceremony at the White House. The event featured a powerful flyover by B-2 stealth bombers, F-22 Raptors, and F-35 jets, drawing thousands of spectators and live national coverage.
The bill passed the House with a very narrow margin of 218 over 214, following considerable Republican back-and-forth. It extends tax cuts from the Trump administration, dramatically increases military spending, and devotes billions to enforcement of immigration policy. . But it also cuts social welfare programs dramatically, something that worries a swath of citizenship and policy experts.
In his signature style, Trump declared, โAmerica is winning like never before,โ as the bombers that recently participated in strikes over Iran flew overhead. While his supporters hailed the legislation as a patriotic reset of American priorities, critics pointed out that it could leave over 17 million Americans without health insurance and add $3.4 trillion to the national debt.
The bill’s passage capped off a streak of recent political victories for Trump, including the apparent success in brokering a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Although even if the bill was of dubious benefit to most Americans, it opened deep divides in the Republican party and prompted billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to announce plans for starting a new political party in protest.
Meanwhile, Democrats are mobilizing a political campaign for the midterm elections in 2026 by capitalizing on public sentiment against the bill, which they bill as a transfer of wealth from taxpayers to corporate America and the elite at the expense of regular people. Economists caution the bill could have lasting fiscal effects, with some calling the bill one of the most consequential and divisive changes in U.S. economic policy seen in decades. Meanwhile, as fireworks light up the sky and flyovers are planned throughout the holiday, the nation is further emboldened to seek obvious change in political and legislative priorities.
