As the monsoon sweeps across India, it has brought not relief but widespread destruction. Several states including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are grappling with the aftermath of intense rainfall, with reports of flooding, landslides, and casualties surfacing from multiple regions.
Cloudbursts Cause Devastation in Himachal
In Himachal Pradesh, cloudbursts were reported on Wednesday evening in the Kangra and Kullu districts, following torrential rains. The sudden flooding led to the death of three people, while about 10 others remain missing.
In Kangra’s Khaniyara area, the Manuni stream swelled rapidly, posing a threat to the Indira Priyadarshini Hydroelectric Project site, where 15–20 workers are feared to have been swept away. Rescue teams are actively engaged in ongoing search and recovery operations.
Landslides and Accidents in Uttarakhand
Heavy downpours in Uttarakhand have triggered multiple landslides. Districts including Tehri, Champawat, Chamoli, Nainital, Dehradun, Pauri, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh are under a flood alert.
In Rudraprayag district, a major accident occurred in Gholtir, where an 18-seater bus plunged into the Alaknanda River. One person has been confirmed dead, and seven others were injured, who are now being treated at the district hospital.
Rajasthan Reels Under Heavy Rainfall
The monsoon’s onset has caused waterlogging and flooding in several parts of Rajasthan, with some areas receiving up to 180 mm of rainfall. Low-lying regions have been inundated.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rain alerts for Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer over the coming days.
Delhi Set for Monsoon Arrival
After a long wait, Delhi is finally set to receive monsoon showers. According to IMD, the Delhi-NCR region is likely to witness heavy rain between June 26 and June 30.
Flooding in Maharashtra and Karnataka
In Maharashtra, towns like Shirpur and Washim are experiencing severe waterlogging due to continuous rainfall, disrupting daily life.
In Karnataka, landslides in Hassan and Shiradi Ghat have affected transportation. The IMD has predicted heavy rains over the next three days across several districts in the state.
