On PMO’s orders, NDMC and Delhi Traffic Police begin assessment to manage future congestion around Kartavya Path.

New Delhi: In an effort to avoid traffic jams in the future in central Delhi, especially near the upcoming Central Vista project, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has instructed officials to undertake a comprehensive traffic and parking survey in the region. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Traffic Police have initiated the process together, hiring a private agency to conduct the survey.

The Central Vista redevelopment, which is being built from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, will accommodate offices for some of the most important ministries of the central government. Once it starts, the project will seriously enhance the number of vehicles and daily commuters in the region. With thousands of the government staff expected to work from the new administrative center, worries over traffic congestion and parking deficiency have led to forward-looking planning.

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD), which comes under the Ministry of Urban Development, is developing Central Vista. Aware of the heavy urbanization and burden on urban infrastructure, the PMO recently summoned NDMC officers and directed them to conduct a detailed survey with regard to the volume of vehicles and availability of parking in and around the region.

Rajeev Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), New Delhi Range, assured that the survey would not be restricted to the immediate Central Vista area. It will also cover all major connecting roads that lead into the area. “The survey will measure present vehicle movement as well as predict future traffic conditions. This information will enable us to draw up a detailed plan to keep New Delhi traffic-free and efficient,” he said.

NDMC officials confirmed that the findings of the survey will be used to frame a long-term traffic and parking management plan. Better parking facilities would also be an integral part of the plan so that the employees and visitors could remain in comfort.

For this purpose, NDMC has already shortlisted a private agency to carry out the survey and officially sought the cooperation of the traffic police for the exercise.

The major roads and intersections that will be covered under this survey are

  • Minto Road
  • Tilak Bridge Skywalk Junction
  • Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg–Subramaniam Bharti Marg Junction
  • Nizamuddin Road Bridge Junction
  • Lodhi Road–Bhishma Pitamah Road Junction
  • Aurobindo Marg–IIT Flyover Junction
  • Moti Bagh Metro Station
  • Sardar Patel Marg
  • Gurudwara Nanaksar Chowk
  • Hanuman Mandir, Karol Bagh

This strategic traffic and infrastructure planning project seeks to ensure that the Central Vista, once finished, helps to create a well-planned, congestion-free urban landscape in the heart of Delhi.
