International peace ambassador and social activist Dr. K A Paul has ignited a nationwide discussion by criticizing the political and governmental attention given to foreign sports stars, particularly Argentine footballer Lionel Messi, arguing that it comes at the expense of India’s youth and domestic athletes.

In a viral video statement, Dr. Paul questioned the financial and political arrangements surrounding Messi’s India tour, highlighting the neglect of Indian sports talent and students. He described lavish public spending for the footballer as ā€œa national tragedyā€ and an inappropriate diversion of resources.

Dr. Paul cited reports that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi flew on a special plane to meet Messi in Hyderabad and criticized the West Bengal government for planning an 18-crore statue in Messi’s honor. He also took aim at Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing him of prioritizing foreign sports figures over fulfilling promises for education and youth development programs.

ā€œWhy are we spending hundreds of crores glorifying a foreign footballer when our own players struggle for basic facilities?ā€ Dr. Paul questioned. He emphasized that India must invest in its athletes to compete internationally, pointing to countries such as China, Russia, and the United States, which achieve high Olympic medal counts through sustained investment in infrastructure and talent development.

Dr. Paul also criticized the trend of erecting statues for foreign athletes, suggesting that such honors should be reserved for national figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, or Mother Teresa. He described the political fanfare surrounding Messi’s visit as ā€œdemeaning and excessive,ā€ adding that ā€œIndian politicians have lowered standards by treating a sports star as a godlike figure.ā€

Reflecting on his experience in the 1990s, Dr. Paul noted that he had invited international sports icons like Evander Holyfield and Mahesh Bhupathi to inspire Indian youth, emphasizing that such efforts were meant to motivate, not divert public funds or attention from domestic priorities.

He further criticized ā€œfake agreementsā€ and incomplete financial commitments to institutions such as Osmania University, warning that such practices harm India’s future and undermine public trust. ā€œWhere is the promised money? Has it actually been transferred?ā€ he questioned.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. K A Paul called for systemic reform and urged citizens to hold leaders accountable. ā€œWe must invest in our teams, our youth, and our future. Change is essential, and together we can achieve it,ā€ he said, encouraging widespread sharing of his message.
