Scorching Heat Grips North India: Heatwave and Thunderstorm Alerts Issued in Multiple States

The sun blazes ahead of May-June; dual alerts for heatwave and storms.
New Delhi: Several parts of the country are reeling under intense heat, with temperatures soaring unusually high for this time of year. North Indian states, including Delhi, are experiencing summer-like conditions typically seen in May and June. Many cities have recorded temperatures above 40°C, severely affecting daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heatwaves and strong winds in the coming days.
Temperature Records Broken in Delhi
The mercury continues to rise in the national capital and surrounding areas. In the past 24 hours, Delhi’s Ridge area recorded 41.3°C. Other notable temperatures include Aya Nagar at 40.6°C, Palam at 39.7°C, Safdarjung at 39.6°C, and Lodhi Road at 39.4°C. Residents are struggling with the unexpected early summer heat.
Heatwave Threat in Multiple States
Parts of West Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and East Madhya Pradesh are expected to experience a heatwave from April 25 to 30, according to the IMD. Other regions such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Vidarbha, Punjab, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada may also experience extreme heat, with temperatures expected to be 1–3°C above normal.
Heavy Rainfall Warning in the Northeast
While a major part of the country faces heatwave conditions, the northeastern states are bracing for heavy rainfall. Heavy showers are likely from April 25 to 27 over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh.Heavy rain may fall in Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura on April 25 and 26. Meanwhile, Assam and Meghalaya are likely to get unusually heavy rains on April 26
Strong Winds and Hailstorm Forecast
Over the next 24 hours, thunderstorms will be practically roaring with strong winds in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry. During the course of time from April 26 to 29, about 40 to 50 km/h wind speed might be expecting in eastern India and eastern Uttar Pradesh, too. Hailstorm is quite probable, specifically in Jharkhand on 27-28 April and in Odisha on 28 April.
Storm Alert in Bihar and West Bengal
Bihar is under a thunderstorm alert from April 26 to 28, with wind speeds possibly reaching 50–60 km/h. Thundershowers can be expected in pockets of West Bengal, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and eastern Madhya Pradesh on April 27 and 28. Weather conditions over South Interior Karnataka are expected to worsen on April 27.
