Delhi: HRDS INDIA has expressed concern over the custody of RSS ideologue and political commentator T.G. Mohandas in a case related to allegedly controversial remarks about protesters at Jantar Mantar. The organisation questioned the way and timing of the police action and said that law enforcement must remain fair and impartial.
HRDS INDIA Says Controversial Statements Should Be Handled Under Law
The organisation does not support inflammatory, threatening or irresponsible comments. However, it stressed that authorities should handle such allegations under the established legal framework and avoid selective action.
HRDS INDIA said political or ideological disagreements should not determine whether or how the law is enforced. According to the organisation, equal treatment under the law is essential for maintaining public confidence in the justice system.
Aji Krishnan Urges Equal Action in Similar Cases
Aji Krishnan, Founder-Secretary of HRDS INDIA, said the organisation does not support statements that encourage violence, threaten individuals or cross the boundaries of responsible public debate.
He said authorities should fairly investigate any complaint against T.G. Mohandas and follow due process. He also stressed that authorities should investigate similar allegations against people from other political or ideological groups with the same seriousness and urgency.
Krishnan said selective enforcement could damage public faith in the rule of law.
Democratic Rights Must Be Protected
HRDS INDIA said peaceful demonstrations and the right to file complaints are legitimate parts of a democratic system. It urged the state and police to act neutrally and ensure that political or ideological differences do not influence law enforcement decisions.
Focus on Kerala’s Wider Public Issues
The organisation also cautioned that the controversy surrounding the case could divert attention from other important issues facing Kerala. These include concerns over flood relief efforts and protests by coastal communities.
HRDS INDIA urged the Kerala government and police to act transparently, follow due legal process and apply the law equally. It also called on authorities to protect democratic freedoms and legitimate political expression.
