Thar Driver Runs Over Guard in Delhi: What Happened in Those 23 Seconds?

CCTV footage from Vasant Kunj goes viral, showing a guard getting plowed down—police respond quickly, and the public expresses worry.
New Delhi: A shocking road rage incident has been reported from the upmarket Vasant Kunj region of Delhi, where a security guard was run over by a black Mahindra Thar SUV after attempting to prevent the vehicle from going into a prohibited lane. The whole episode was recorded by CCTV and has gone viral on the social media platform X, triggering a debate on careless driving and the escalating culture of violence on Indian roads.
The 1 minute and 23 seconds video starts with a peaceful street view of a food stall and an on-road parked car. The first minute doesn’t show even a glimpse of any fight or the Thar vehicle. Yet, at one minute, there is a black Thar coming abruptly on screen from one of the corners. One security guard, who was nearby, approaches to cut off the SUV, according to reports, from entering a no-entry area or from causing disruption in the zone by continuous honking.
The guard is shown on camera trying to talk sense into the driver’s head and indicating that he should stop. The driver, however, appears agitated and impatient. Instead of backing away, he speeds up and knowingly drives the large SUV into the guard, pushing him down and dragging him for a short distance. The final 23 seconds of the video capture the guard’s impact and subsequent fall to the ground, as the car swiftly accelerates away.
The guard, whose name has not been revealed, survived the ordeal miraculously but sustained multiple fractures and severe injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is recuperating. His condition is stable, authorities say, but he will need a long time of treatment and rehabilitation.
Delhi Police have detained the Thar driver, who has been booked on several charges, including attempted murder, rash driving, and obstruction of duty. The car has also been impounded as part of the investigation.
Public response to the video has been furious. Users on social media have condemned the driver for what he did and sympathized with the injured guard. “This is not a Thar; it’s a weapon in the wrong hands,” a user wrote. Another said, “Why do these aggressive people always drive Thars? Where is the basic humanity?”
The incident has generated debate due to the rise in incidents of road rage, the arrogance of some drivers, and the slow response of bystanders. Most viewers were especially upset that no one came out to assist the guard while the attack was taking place or in its immediate aftermath.
Police authorities have vowed that a full investigation is under way and that justice will prevail.
