Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns After Tensions with Government Boil Over

Decision to accept opposition-backed impeachment motion triggers final fallout in an increasingly strained relationship with the ruling BJP

New Delhi, July 23, 2025

In a change of circumstances, Jagdeep Dhankhar once again resigned as Vice President on Monday, ending a term defined by increasing friction with the central government. Sources suggest the immediate trigger was his unexpected acceptance of an opposition-backed impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma a move made without consulting the ruling BJP.

While an identical motion was pending in the Lok Sabha, Dhankhar’s unilateral decision in the Rajya Sabha was viewed as a serious breach by the government, reportedly crossing a “red line” for top BJP leadership.

Dhankhar’s nearly three-year term had seen multiple confrontations with the government. Notable flashpoints included his decision to lift the suspension of AAP MP Raghav Chadha, overruling the Privileges Committee; his public criticism of farm laws during the farmer protests; and sharp remarks against the Supreme Court’s stance on the Justice Varma matter.

According to insiders, the government had grown increasingly uneasy with Dhankhar’s perceived tilt toward opposition voices, particularly when he allowed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to deliver pointed critiques of government policies on the Rajya Sabha floor.

The resignation was announced suddenly via social media late Monday, catching even senior leaders off-guard. The BJP is now likely to accelerate the appointment of a more ideologically aligned successor in the run up to the monsoon session. This will help stabilize Upper House proceedings.

Political analysts say Dhankhar’s exit demonstrates how delicate the balance between constitutional independence and political loyalty can be, particularly for those serving in high office, such as the Vice President.
