Indian Railways Changes Emergency Quota Guidelines, Delineates New Timelines for Ticket Application
A significant policy change to enhance the efficiency of reservations has seen Indian Railways amend the process for applying for emergency quota (EQ) tickets. The Ministry of Railways (MoR), in a recent circular said, “It will be mandatory for the traveller to apply for EQ (Emergency Quota) at least one day before the day of journey.”

For trains scheduled to depart between 12:00 AM and 2:00 PM, EQ requests must be submitted by 12 noon the previous day. For departures between 2:01 PM and 11:59 PM, the cut-off time for requests is 4 PM on the preceding day. Most notably, the new policy states that requests for EQ for travel on the same day will no longer be entertained.
In addition, (and noted on the Railways’ EQ announcement) if the journey falls on a Sunday or holiday, the EQ request must be made on the last working day prior.

This was last based on the Railways’ decision to issue their Reservation Chart eight hours prior to departure (instead of the previous four hours). These changes are part of other modernization efforts throughout the network.

The ministry also encouraged all personnel to carefully scrutinize all applications that came in for EQ, as the EQ system was designed to respond swiftly and – in some cases – for a real emergency, certainly not for someone not entitled and taking advantage of the privilege, as EQ is for emergency travel purposes by government employees and no one else, like many other government frameworks, abuses have driven changes.

These new posts are to help reduce last-minute disruptions and create transparency in the reservation list for millions of passengers taking the rail network each day.

Indian Railways expects all involved to respect the new deadlines timelines to ensure everything runs as smoothly and timely as possible.
