Security personnel in the union region of Jammu and Kashmir were placed on high alert on Monday, August 5, in commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the repeal of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
Sensing a potential threat to the movement of security personnel, authorities have recommended residents to observe a “dry day,” which means no movement of any security convoys. The police advise further stated that convoys of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims should not move between several base camps.
As a precaution, no new batches of pilgrims were allowed to depart from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp for Kashmir. “As a precautionary step, the yatra is on hold for today, and no new batches are being admitted from Jammu to Kashmir.”

“August 5, 2019 is a very important day in our lives.” On this critical day five years ago, a historic error was reversed, and we, the people of Jammu and Kashmir, were fully joined with the rest of India. Vibodh Gupta, general secretary of the J&K BJP and former MLC, claimed that people can now completely enjoy their rights and liberties while striving towards development.
Opposition groups, including the Congress and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), slammed the BJP for repealing Article 370.
Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma criticized the BJP for failing to address the concerns of the people, particularly the Dogras, regarding the changes made over the past five years. He condemned the party for what he described as a lack of sensitivity in celebrating the downgrading of the historic Dogra state, which he claimed undermined the rights, dignity, and identity of the people of J&K.
