Liver: The Important but Most Neglected Organ
Among all the organs in the human body, the liver performs the most vital roles—the more than 500 essential functions including detoxifying harmful substances, regulating metabolic processes, helping digestion, and the like, all of which testify to the criticality of this specific human organ. But still, liver care is often overlooked when it comes to personal health.
Neglecting liver health can lead to serious illnesses such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. Many of these illnesses can be avoided with prompt treatment, increased knowledge, and lifestyle changes.
Theme for 2025: “Food is Medicine”
The theme for this year’s World Liver Day is “Food is Medicine,” as it clearly indicates the very influence of our food habits on liver health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps the liver function best.
However, it cannot be rolled out to the entire population, making awareness even more increasingly important. The ‘Healthier Living’ campaign not only intends to sensitize individuals but also to strengthen public health policy, transforming preventive care with nutrition as one of the most important aspects.
How to Take the ‘Healthier Living’ Pledge and Get Your Certificate
Simple: Make all your pledges by visiting the MyGov portal and making a few lifestyle commitments, such as the following:
– Reduce oil use by 10% every day.
– Spread awareness about balanced diets and obesity prevention.
– Promote healthy eating within your community.
At completion, participants download a digital certificate from the Government of India attesting to their personal commitment to better health and well-being.
Simple Steps to Keep Your Liver Healthy
Maintaining one’s liver health does not require a drastic change; it merely requires consistent conscious efforts. Here are just a few effective practices:
1. Eat a Balanced Diet
Consume a range of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and wholesome grains. Avoid highly processed and fried foods.
2. Reduce Sugar and Salt Intake
Too much sugar can lead to fatty liver, and excess salt increases liver inflammation and blood pressure.
3. Limit Alcohol Consumption
Cirrhosis, fatty liver, liver failure, and liver inflammation can all result from excessive drinking. Drink in moderation if you do.
4. Stay Physically Active
Exercise promotes a healthy weight and minimizes fat accumulation in the liver.
5. Get Vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B
Vaccinations protect against these liver-infecting viruses that can lead to long-term damage.
6. Avoid Self-Medication and Overuse of Painkillers
Unsupervised use of medications, such as paracetamol, can harm the liver. Before using for an extended period of time, always discuss with your doctor.
7. Drink Plenty of Water
Staying hydrated supports your liver’s detoxification processes and overall function.
8. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can result in liver scarring, is more likely to occur in obese people.
9. Avoid Sharing Personal Items
Razors, toothbrushes, and needles can transmit hepatitis viruses. Always use personal and sanitized items.
10. Get Regular Liver Check-Ups
Early detection through liver function tests can prevent serious complications and help you stay on track.
The future of health is nurtured with awareness and action. Increasing cases of disorders of the liver can be seen, but the good news is that they are preventable for the most part. We can substantially alleviate the burden of liver diseases by changing our daily habits, however small, and by spreading awareness in our communities.
Government campaigns strive to provide inspiration to every citizen to seize control of his or her health. Our small actions taken together toward a national campaign that encourages others to do the same shall complete the vision of a healthier, stronger India one step at a time.
So, on this World Liver Day, pledge to live healthy, get your certificate for it, and start your journey toward a healthier life.
